The water break happened in the downtown area of White Plains on Wednesday, March 27 around 11:30 a.m., according to White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach.
The large break affected water service for residents throughout the city. Thanks to repairs from the city's Department of Public Works though, most service was restored by 1 p.m.
As a result of the break, residents may initially have brown water and should run cold water until it appears clear, city officials said.
Officials did not say how the break occurred.
